Seeds of Discontent

I have something to say.
I’m not sure what though …
I have this vague sense of unease
again.

I’ve been like this lately.
Either vague unease or
distress, not vague at all!
I think

since the election last fall
catapulted me into a land
of people I no longer recognize
and I

no longer trust them or anything
they say or my own judgement on
who I thought people were
or what

this country is all about and
even alone, with my own blog
I feel this unease and dread
so that

even a poem becomes political.
Who said the personal becomes
political? Here political becomes
personal.

There’s anger and hate and little
seeds of bitterness strewn about
so that they appear regularly in
my thoughts.

They sprout like weeds that spring
unexpectedly after a rain
and grow a foot overnight
it is

disconcerting how my own garden
is unrecognizable some days.
But there will always be weeds.
I will

get to work with the machete
and clear space for the flowers
and plant seeds for the future.
No garden

ever grew without tending and weeding
and replanting and tender loving care.
I will pluck those thoughts one at a time
if need be

and replant with joy and love and learning
peace and patience and generosity
a little hope around the edges and watch
them grow.

Note I have planted a patch of heirloom
seeds of discontent to foster change
without the tendrils of anger choking
off life.
