Has to be No

I had to steel myself
and bolster myself
and stand strong.

I had to say no.

Sorry, but no.

There was a moment
of silent disbelief
that hung
I steeled and
her hurt?

No.  Angry?

No. Astonished.

She turned and left.

I closed the door.

Leaned against it
and cried
for this and all the times
that “no” had to be the answer.

For choices
that brought us here
to today
to this no

and all the other
choices and no’s
and should have been no’s …

I felt shattered
and battered
and still feel
anxious and bruised,
nervous to look at the door

for fear of the past
peering in the sidelight
red eyes glowing guilt
and expectations and
always wanting more.

Fate brought us together
for a time in history.
I will learn to pass the
door again without
flutters and
the answer is and
will always be no.
