Late August

Morning was a real shock.
It is August.
Late August, I understand,
but August still
yet the chill
goes deep
not just coolness
but a damp chill
of foretell.

The sounds of children
squeeling and laughing
and splashing
of late-night giggles
and songs with s’mores

has returned
to birdsong and leaf
flutters; squirrels
scurries as they stash
food for winter;

of raccoon rustles and
dainty geese nibbles
[fattening up before
the big trip south
moved up now, I guess
by the chill]

and lake lapping
gently, so gently
as if sighing and
settling to a nap
after the raucous

The land and lake
can be themselves again
without the summer trappings
of floaties and perfume
of sunblock.

The children hunker
down to lessons
and schedules.

I sit and sigh with the lake
remembering the laughter
the camp fires
the summer loves
the heady hopes
and wrap my sweatshirt tighter
as I spy a leaf turning
and another gray hair.

I shiver and wish
that summer could stay
just a little longer.
