“But,”
she insisted tearfully,
emphatically
resentfully
“she never taught me
how to change.”
As roofs leaked
and crumbled walls;
as paint peeled
and wood rotted
indeed
mother herself mouldered
and everything aged
and changed
without being taught how.
Living in ruins
of a life her parents built
and left
she lamented
“I never learned how”
and I looked around
aghast and amazed
for the red tomatoes
and yellow sunflowers
green tinted apples
sniffed for the smell of cut grass
and listened for the laughs
witchy cackling laughs
of the girl I knew
in the garden of long ago
but there was nothing
and she insisted again
“I never learned how to change”
and blamed
“she never taught me how.”
