What the Trees Remember

Footfalls running
pounding through the paths
shouting and hooting

guffaws and tinkling of laughter
whispers of awe and wonder
and gossip and trickery

water reflecting
and flowing and splashing
sand in shoes and teeth

s’mores and songs
and campfire smoke
mosquitoes straight out of hell!

toadsong at night so loud
it was difficult to sleep
with their chorus

a time not that distant
when we were doubled over,
crippled with laughter

crying with trying
not to laugh and God help us
not to pee.

These moments are what we
remember and I’d like to think
what the trees remember of us
